Bangladesh is taking initial steps toward upgrading its air combat capabilities, with a high-level committee preparing a draft agreement to frame negotiations for Chinese Chengdu J-10CE multirole fighter aircraft and dedicated attack helicopters.
Zahed Ur Rahman, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, outlined the core strategic considerations behind evaluating the Chinese defense platforms for the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF):
- Regional Combat Performance: Bangladeshi defense planners have closely monitored operational reports from recent South Asian aerial clashes involving Chinese-made J-10 variants. The assessment highlighted the J-10’s tactical performance when benchmarked against advanced 4.5-generation platforms like the French Dassault Rafale.
- Cost-to-Capability Ratio: Compared to Western options such as the Dassault Rafale or Eurofighter Typhoon, the J-10CE offers a lower flyaway and lifecycle maintenance cost while maintaining advanced air superiority capabilities.
- Combined Aviation Capabilities: Beyond multirole tactical fighters, the draft agreement incorporates dedicated attack helicopters to strengthen BAF close air support (CAS) and rotary-wing operations.
With the initial draft framework prepared, upcoming G2G (Government-to-Government) talks will define force structure targets, procurement timelines, pilot training pipelines, and weapons integration packages.
