SAVAR, Bangladesh, August 22, 2026: Newly elected President of Bangladesh Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Saturday.
The President placed a floral wreath at the memorial altar in honour of those who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War. He then observed a moment of solemn silence in remembrance of the fallen heroes.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, a smartly turned-out contingent of the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force presented the President with a guard of honour.
President Fakhrul later signed the visitors’ book at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, recording his reflections on the sacrifices of the Liberation War and the significance of the memorial to the nation.
Senior government officials, the chiefs of the three services and senior military and civil officials were present during the visit. Those in attendance included Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Khondkar Misbah ul Azim and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan.
The visit came one day after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh at Bangabhaban on August 21.
President Fakhrul also planted a sapling on the National Martyrs’ Memorial premises before leaving the site.
